Trip to Washington D.C. - Day One:Steve and I decided to walk to the National Mall, thinking it would only be a couple blocks. It was more like 1.5 miles. Ugh. After that hike, we consulted our map, which made the mall look like a park that was a few blocks long - again, more like 2 miles. But... we did manage to walk the whole length of the Mall and back with only marginal foot damage.
Highlights:We got to see the Washington Monument on the clearest day of the week. The contrast was beautiful.
We also randomly stumbled across the Daughters of the American Revolution Hall (I am planning to join this society this fall, once I have time to do all the geneological background that they require).
We visited the Lincoln Monument, the Korean War Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the World War II Memorial, the World War I Memorial, the White House, and the Smithsonian Museum of the Native American.
We found an R2-D2 Mailbox.
Steve got to eat dinner at his favorite restaurant - the ESPN Zone.
Lowlights:The hotel we stayed in was full of field trip students. The room right next to our original room was full of loud teenage girls. After they kept us up from midnight to 1 a.m., we decided to call the front desk. The hotel kindly moved us from a small, single full bed room to the hotel suite, complete with a king size bed, seperate living room, and minor kitchen applicances. Didn't get much sleep that night, but it sure made the rest of the week better.
